Ways to Secure Your Wireless Connection

In order to secure your wireless connection properly to prevent unauthorized access or data breach, you want to use the latest wireless security methods possible. The best ones to use are WPA and WPA2. For the encryption method, the only two available are TKIP and AES. It is highly recommended to use WPA2 with AES as it gives the strongest encryption possible for your network. If some older wireless devices cannot use either WPA or WPA2, then it is time to replace them. Never use WEP as the security method as it has been proven to already been cracked.

Once you determine the security and encryption method to use, you want to create a security key (or passphrase) to encrypt the data. Use a long passphrase because the longer the phrase, the better the encryption. An example of a good passphrase is a sentence such as ‘MyBusinessIsTheBestInTheCommunity3452’ (without the quotes). Use a combination of upper and lower case letters with random numbers. Never use only numbers (i.e. 356314252) or dictionary words (i.e. apple) as a passphrase since they can easily be cracked. Also, set your ‘Group Key Update Interval’ to the lowest time setting possible to allow a new encryption key to be refreshed at a faster time interval to deter hackers.

You can also take extra steps to protect your wireless network from unauthorized use by using sophisticated authentication methods using Microsoft Windows Server or a third party authentication hardware device.
